Siemens developed new algorithm for automatic high-speed train operation14 November 2016
On September 29, within the “Internet of Things” exhibition and conference, there was a report of the representative of Siemens LLC Sergey Sobolev. The speaker told about the advantages of application of IoT technologies in high-speed intercity and suburban trains.
High-speed electric trains Sapsan and Lastochka were developed by Siemens to the order of JSC Russian Railways.
Specifications of the electric trains:
1. Intercity electric train Sapsan:
- speed – 200-250 km/h;
- weight – 700-1400 t;
- distance for full service brake application (250->0) – 3 km.
2. Suburban electric train Lastochka:
- speed – 160 km/h;
- weight – 270 t;
- distance for full service brake application (1600->0) – 800 m.
Internet of Trains – new algorithm for automatic train operation from Siemens
With the development of technologies, IoT company Siemens has worked out a modification of automatic train operation of the next generation, which has a function of energy-efficient automated train driving.
In order to complete the task, developers should have observed a number of conditions:
- to develop accurate train schedule;
- to take into account speed limitations;
- to provide passengers with maximum comfort;
- to make the train energy-efficient.
Preliminary modeling data has shown that the use of Siemens metaheuristic algorithm will allow to reduce hauling energy consumption by up to 15%.
The representative of Siemens made arguments for the implementation of a new algorithm for automatic train operation:
- energy efficiency – possibility to save up to 11 GWh for the Sapsan trains;
- accuracy – model takes into account grading of track;
- comfortableness – due to the reduction of brakeage frequency comfort of passengers increases;
- high speed – 300 km of path is calculated almost instantaneously;
- flexibility – possibility to take into account any conditions and limitations.
According to Siemens, comparing to autopilot system that are used in high-speed trains now, metaheuristic algorithms will help to save from 5 to 10% energy, as well as to provide passengers with maximum comfort and safety.
