Case study from STRIZH Telematika: from LPWAN technology to first IoT platform

September 29, Andrey Sinitsyn, the representative of STRIZH Telematika, spoke at the “Internet of Things” conference. The speaker told about special features of building of a scalable platform for Internet of Things based on innovative wireless and energy-efficient technology called LPWAN (Low-Power Wide-Area Network).       

According to analysts from Gartner, IDC and Machina Research, the Internet of Things market will grow up to 50 billion smart devices in seven years. But how will they be connected? Nowadays, we don’t have a single cheap and high performance technology of energy-independent and scalable devices’ connectivity to the network. Solutions that are currently used – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, etc. – are too expensive, complicated and unreliable, which doesn’t allow to implement large-scale projects and slows up the IoT industry development.           

STRIZH Telematika offers its own solution of this issue: radio protocol with low power consumption and broad territorial coverage – LPWAN. The new technology can transmit data up to 50 km and reliably operate without battery changing around 10 years.        

Operating principle of LPWAN networks 

Using energy-efficient LPWAN wireless solutions, STRIZH develops reliable devices that can transmit data at an immense distance. The operating principle of this technology is the following: sensors and counters are connected to company’s modems and transmit indications in the network by means of the base station. Then the special server processes and analyzes data. Obtained information is user-friendly and easy to understand. Besides, using a feedback channel, a user can remotely monitor device operation.              

STRIZH system consists of various components: data metering device, modems, sensors, radio modules and other specialized devices and solutions for different areas, radio base station that obtains data from modems, and cloud platform, allowing client to get an access to their own account from around the world using Internet.

  • LPWAN chip set: combines a transceiver and microcontroller on one crystal, allowing to reach the highest possible indicators of receive sensitivity and data transmission accuracy;   
  • LPWAN communication protocol: open API, allowing to create a full ecosystem of connected devices;   
  • telecommunication equipment: a wide range of base stations for certain purposes;
  • Cloud software: to monitor, manage the networks and so on. Based on software, one can quickly scale the network by connecting other devices to it.  

Advantages of LPWAN-based STRIZH platform  

STRIZH technology operates due to company’s own efficient radio protocol that can work more than 10 years autonomously without wires and battery changing.  

Company’s devices don’t require connection to the electrical network. The process of receiving, processing and sending data is fully automated, and data can be transmitted up to 10-50 km without intermediate equipment and losses. It is important to note that all devices are in a single network, to which one can easily connect new objects. It is enough to take any device, connect it to the hardware platform for IoT objects, and you will get a telematics box connected to the network via LPWAN.

  • remote data collection of housing and community amenities;

  • agricultural industry;
  • smart city;
  • medicine and others.
