Concept of Internet of Things

Concept of Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is essentially a great electronic brain uniting smart devices into the integrated self-regulated system. All appliances are connected using the web; they are able to collect, exchange, and analyze information, as well as accept decisions without human involvement.

Concept and meaning of the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) covers both the concept of connected smart devices and the analysis of collected data. Smart solution technology is designed to make life better due to the automation and optimization of social and household processes.

To realize how the IoT functions and what it is, one can imagine the Internet allowing millions of people to contact and share information with each other. In the context of IoT, their role is performed by devices following the common standard and interrelated for solving certain tasks.

The most popular example of IoT technologies is a smart home. It is a fully automated network of devices: sensors, appliances, cameras, and signaling systems. The owner of such a house can control system operations remotely, control the system using the voice, and adjust various profiles according to their needs. Programmed equipment operates almost autonomously after the adjustment, releasing people from household routines. A similar scheme can be applied not only in domestic buildings but also in offices and other premises.

How does the Internet of Things differ from common settings and automation of appliances? The technology has several significant features:

  • The single control center (that analyzes data, accepts decisions, and adapts to human needs).
  • Common standards (currently, there are several individual local systems).
  • Security (appliances and systems should be reliably protected from hacker attacks).

How and where IoT technologies are applied

The Internet of Things refers to not only smart gadgets and homes. The technology is also highly efficient in industrial and business sectors. The operational concept of appliances is similar to the smart home one, but connected devices at the manufacturing site are in charge of the more complicated processes. Accurate algorithms allow the IoT to optimize and speed up the production, as well as make it more cost efficient. It is caused by the fact that smart systems frequently replace people at work requiring the speed and accuracy of data processing and its compilation.

Such capabilities of smart technologies are used in:

  • healthcare;
  • logistics;
  • construction;
  • agricultural sector;
  • urban services.

The number of appliances interacting not only with a human being but also with each other is growing worldwide. According to Verizon’s experts, the IoT market of the industrial sector will offer 5.4 billion devices by 2020. Such trends show how rapidly the Internet of Things is able to transform and optimize both routine life aspects and certain manufacturing sectors.
