Big data: possibilities and predictions
Imagine a huge store with goods chaotically scattered in all departments: bakery products are near gardening equipment, looking for housewares, you come across meat and frozen fish. Big data is aimed put the shelves in order, help buyers find desired goods and consult on them.
What is big data?
In layman’s terms, big data is a way of storage and processing of massive pieces of information. According to experts, it’s a special tool created to collect and analyze various types of data, be it structured (laid in some sequence), or non-structured (chaotically organized). The Western practices suggest considering big data as an object for analysis.
Big data is in point of fact an alternative method of organizing massive and small data volumes.
Application of big data
Big data technology is a solution aimed to help people in various life spheres, for instance, ensure security of private life. Some companies, particularly financial ones, leverage big data to combat fraud by protecting user data and money transactions.
By detecting and structuring various data volumes on the Internet, big data facilitates our everyday life from governmental control to the manufacturing process and sales.
Let’s introduce an illustrative example of the effective application of this technology. The telecommunications company Beeline stores millions of data about its clients. Due to HDFS and an open-source framework Apache Spark, the company segmented own database to protect clients from viruses and breaches. Besides, Beeline uses complex and intelligent systems for data analysis - Rapidminer and Python.
What does the future hold for big data?
As the Russian-based IT company IBS reported, the total number of global data surged over 6.5 ZB in 2015. What is more, 40-44 ZB will be generated by 2020. According to the predictions, it won’t be users but enterprises who will produce the biggest amount of data. Analysts at the Data Age 2025 ensure that in the future, we are likely to face the burning problem of data storage and security. However, the technology of cloud computing or big data will help the mankind benefit from massive data volumes.
