Intel expert discussed IoT standardization at the conference “The Internet of Things”

IoT doesn’t stand for sensors. It is the ability to gather and analyze relevant information using sensors. This was the leading idea of Igor Rudym’s report at “The Internet of Things” conference which took place on the 29th of September in the World Trade Center. The speaker touched upon the topic of creating new united communication protocols for the Internet of things and common solutions of Open Source.

According to statistics of reliable sources (Cisco, IDC и Intel), there will be more than 50 bln smart devices in the world by 2020. There are only 15 bln IoT gadgets at the moment but 85% of them are not connected to the single network. It means that the information collected by smart devices exists but it doesn’t go any further and isn’t processed.

Today the influence of the Internet of Things on different spheres of life is quite noticeable. Smart technologies are used in logistics, transportation, manufacturing, retail, medicine, for smart home equipment and other spheres. IoT solutions help to recue lives, increase work productivity, reduce cost of products and services, improve the quality of people’s lives and are useful while coping with ecologic problems. If all IoT devices are connected to the network and have a single communication protocol, the Internet of Things will become even more effective.

At the moment Russian companies aren’t investing in the development and implementation of such solutions because the industry is quite young and there are lots of unsettled issues.

Major problems of the industry are:

  • low level of security of data transfer and retention;
  • incompatibility with other devices.

In order to protect data Intel Company uses reliable technologies of Intel Security.

But the second issue is more complicated. In particular, it is only possible to make devices compatible by developing common world standards. But the market is quite large and lots of manufacturers are trying to get their clients used to their services and devices. So, one will spend a lot of time waiting for general standards.

Intel Company offers another approach – to use network hubs which will gather information from sensors, process it and send via protected connection canals. The issue of compatibility of devices will be solved due to special software of the hub which will support the protocol of data exchange of a particular sensor.

Gateway hubs provide:

  • automatic search and connection of various devices to the network which makes it easier to install new systems and devices;
  • increased compatibility of devices due to primary data processing (i.e. standardization and broadcast of protocols);
  • instant reaction to new problems (hubs can analyze data on the spot);
  • opportunity to implement program and hardware solutions for protection of information and access to devices.

Besides, Open Source allows producing single standards of the Internet of Things. Igor Rudym mentioned three such systems:

  • Zephyr – a real-time operating system which can be applied to Quark microprocessors;
  • Ostro – an operating system based on Yocto Linux. The sphere of application – IoT systems such as Atom and Core;
  • IoTivity – Open Interconnect Framework – software framework for developing apps which support OIC Standard(C/C++/Java/JavaScript).

IoT industry is rapidly evolving. While world market leaders are working on the creation of single communication protocols, effective and reliable Intel solutions might be of use.
